Bethel Pantry - Feeding the Multitude
Earlier this year, volunteers scrambled to serve more than 500 people a month at Madison ’s Bethel food fantry, one of Dane County ’s largest pantry facilities. Thanks in part to a Basic Needs Grant from Madison Community Foundation, Bethel will now be able to serve up to 800 people a month. With the facility expansion completed, Bethel held a community open house on June 14 to view the result.
“We increased our floor space by almost 40%, added refrigeration and freezer space, lighting, ventilation, and created wheelchair access,” said Bob Hokinga, who, with his wife Peggy, coordinates services at Bethel ’s food pantry. “We will now be able to take greater advantage of free and reduced-cost food from Second Harvest and Community Action Commission – supplies we were unable to take because we had nowhere to put them.”
Madison Community Foundation provided $23,000 as part of the Basic Needs Grant Focus for 2009, facilitating purchase of a large capacity freezer, food bins, and extensive shelving for the pantry.

Columbus Area Endowment Kick-off
On June 17th John and Mary Roche hosted a celebration announcing the establishment of the Columbus Area Endowment (CAE) by a volunteer group of Columbus area citizens. That evening, over $1550 was donated towards the initial fund goal of $25,000.
Joe Conlin, one of the fund’s founding members, acted as emcee of the event and inspired all with “The five P’s of an endowment”:
1. Perennial: The principal lives on.
2. Perpetual: Earnings are harvested year after year.
3. Purposeful: Giving is for the benefit of the local area..
4. Philanthropic: Giving for good feels good.
5. Perpetuity: Your gifts keep giving forever.
The Columbus Area Endowment will enhance the cultural, educational, and economic vitality of the Columbus area and support the well-being and quality of life of its citizens through charitable grants.
For more information and to make a gift to the CAE, see our
