Madison Community Foundation Awards $412,000 to Dane County Libraries

April 15, 2009 – Madison, WI - Madison Community Foundation recently announced the second phase of the Library Collections Grant Project, awarding $27,500 over the next three years to each of fifteen libraries in Dane County. This second phase will complete the project, begun two years ago, of funding distinct collections in all twenty-seven Dane County libraries, including the Dane County Bookmobile. Grants will be used to purchase focused collections of lending materials such as print books, DVD’s, CD’s, audio books, and computer software.

The grants translate into thousands of new materials for Dane County Library users. Niche collections in each library underscore the value, quality, and character of each neighborhood or community, while creating destinations for specific, exclusive subject areas. The entire collection of the South Central Library System is strengthened by diversity, and duplication is avoided. Most of the materials are available through inter-library loan via the online library catalog LINKcat.

“During difficult times like these, public libraries offer places of comfort and strength to communities -- for everyone from toddlers to the elderly,” says Elaine DeSmidt, 3rd District Dane County Supervisor and South Central Library System Board member. “These special collections will invite more people to come in out of the storm, open their imaginations, and dream big."

The Madison Community Foundation grants are an opportunity to link programming activities to the new materials to develop partnerships and build more community support.  As the collections grow, the library and community partners plan to hold events and offer outreach opportunities. A brochure designed to promote the program and describe MCF support is available at any of the county libraries and online at www.madisoncommunityfoundation.org. A central website describing the program and providing links to all the libraries can be found at www.scls.info/danecollections.

Madison Community Foundation financial support for Dane County's public library system totals over $5 million since 2000.
